FAFSA verification
Many students are finished with the application process once the FAFSA is submitted, but some are not. The Department of Education (DOE) selects approximately one third of all applicants for a process called Verification and occasionally flags a student for review of name, citizenship or income. If you have received a notification from NLU that your FAFSA has been selected for verification you are required to provide the following documents to the Student Finance Office:
a signed copy of your federal income tax return and W-2s (W-2 = the end of year tax form showing wages earned that is sent by your employer);
a signed copy of your parents' federal income tax return and W-2s (if you’re considered dependent based on FAFSA dependency questions)
If you were not required to file a federal income tax return, you must submit two alternate documents:
IRS form 1722. This free form can be ordered by calling the IRS at 800.829.1040.
Other documents may be required to complete the Verification process. You will be contacted by the Student Finance Office if necessary.
